For the creatives in the crowd……if you are designing trays for Walmart, there’s a good chance you may have been assigned the task of developing an expanding tray.
Expanding Tray? For those not familiar, an expanding tray, for the most part, consists of an integral copy panel that can be unfolded or slid into position. The ultimate benefit of expanding trays is a reduction in shipping footprint, sometimes as much as 25%. An added bonus is component reduction, depending on the design.
On a recent store check at Walmart, we found a totally different twist on the expanding copy panel with these Sprint Valley end cap trays.
Upon closer inspection, we noticed the copy panels on the left side of all three trays. See it yet? What a nifty concept…….expanding copy panels located inside of the tray! These fillers were designed with a series of ‘slot rails’ on the bottom and back sides of the inner support. Based on the product planogram, these slots enabled assembly to adjust the filler incrementally by inserting tabs into the slots based on desired width. Solid design solution that worked well on-shelf.
